 Freedom Foundation Loses Access to Members’ Information

The Freedom Foundation sent a Freedom of Information (“FOI”) Request to Jefferson County seeking information for each Jefferson County employee who is currently employed in a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with CSEA/AFSCME Local 1000. With respect to each employee, the Freedom Foundation sought the employee’s first name, middle name, last name, gender, public office address, job title, hire date, agency or department, work email address or naming convention and domain, work telephone number, and bargaining unit.

The County refused to provide the requested information as an unwarranted invasion of privacy and that the Freedom Foundation wanted the information to solicit the employees. The Freedom Foundation sued Jefferson County and the New York Supreme Court found in favor of the Freedom Foundation finding that it was entitled to the information under Freedom of Information Law in New York.

The County appealed, arguing that the Freedom Foundation wants the information for solicitation purposes only which is improper under FOI. The Freedom Foundation argued that it wanted to educate public employees about the 2018 US Supreme Court Janus decision. The New York Appellate Division, 4^th Department agreed with Jefferson County, reversed the lower court and dismissed the Freedom Foundation’s lawsuit.

This is a victory for our members’ privacy and protecting them against unwanted solicitations from the Freedom Foundation.

Negotiation Update!

The second sit down with the Monroe County team is July 30, 2024. Then we will be having negotiation sessions every two weeks after that date until we have a tentative agreement. We can only give "status" updates at this point.

Unit 7401 to Unit 7400 Merger

An email will go out on Sunday, July 14, 2024 giving information relating to our possible merger. See the dates below for what you will receive (emails):

1.July 15-July 18 Any questions relating to the Unit 7400 and Unit 7401 merger to be answered.

New SCAM!

An anti-union group based in New Jersey is contacting members and offering them money to participate in focus groups in an effort to convince them to leave the union. These offers are clearly a scam designed to model CSEA's own focus group efforts. DON'T BE SCAMMED

Change of Address:

If you change your address with Monroe County, please call CSEA 2 1-800-342-4146 to change your address with CSEA.  Why?   Once we get to the point where we have a tentative agreement, this agreement will be mailed to each person in the CBA.  If we get yours returned, we will have to try to reach you to get your updated address.  Why not keep it up-to-date?

Negotiating Update:

Your negotiating team will be sitting down with the County on 6/25/24 for the first time. After this initial meeting, we will be meeting every two weeks to discuss except we have some conflicts in July so we will only meet once. The negotiating team for the County does have our Proposal #1 which is language changes within the contract.

Negotiation Update 05/12/2024 

We have three (3) proposals in one package to give to the County.

1. The first proposal is for language changes like: taking out words in Articles and adding commas to separate reimbursements, among other language changes.

2. The second proposal is for monetary changes like:  wages and adding the shift differential agreement changes, among other monetary changes.

3. The third proposal is for section changes.  If there is a section in the contract, there could be come changes like:  taking out titles that no longer exist in a particular section or adding verbiage to existing sections or changing dollar amounts for items in the sections.

 CSEA 2024 statewide college scholarship applications available Applications for our union’s statewide college scholarships are now available! Graduating high school seniors who are eligible dependents of CSEA active members are eligible to apply for and receive a scholarship. CSEA awards 18 $1,000 scholarships under the Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarship program, three in each region. Pearl Insurance and MetLife each sponsor a one-time $2,500 award. Application deadline is May 1, 2024. PLEASE NOTE: Old applications could disqualify potential candidates. Please do not use applications from previous years – applications were recently revised. People join unions to protect their right to have a voice at the table with management. They join unions to have due process if disciplined or terminated. They join unions for the right to have a contract that has been forged by a group of workers that through their struggle fought for equal rights. Rights that are not usually afforded by management on their own accord but must be fought by workers coming together for one purpose and that is to have a say at their work site. A right to dispute without retaliation.

Negotiation Update March 2024:

The Negotiating Team has been hard at work reviewing the surveys that we received to include in our proposals to the County.  We CANNOT get into details as this could cause the County to file an Improper Practice charges against us.  We want you to know that we are listening to all comments being told to us.

 Update to Negotiations Status:

2.Created a survey to be completed by dues paying members -CSEA got permission to send the survey out via County email system since we've had people not get the surveys via email. Working on sending this out again. - received, sent out

3.Create a Communication Plan (CP) for the Negotiation team to review. This is a working document. We will be updating the CP as we go forward. - completed working document

4. Sent the letter to the County to negotiate with them (this opens up the negotiation) completed by the LRS

5. Next meeting setup for 1/25/24 with the NT completed

6.Next meeting 2/29/24 - Team went over the surveys that were submitted by the membership.

7. Section meetings are happening with representatives to go over language.

8.Next NT meeting 3/14/24 - we will go over Section language

9.Next NT meeting 3/28/24 - we will go over all changes

10. We should then be ready to sit down with the County to negotiate.

 Negotiation Update:

We have received 223 survey responses.  There is still time.  You have till 2/29/24 to respond to the survey.  Your negotiation team has been meeting to look over our current contract.  We are waiting till the second round of survey results come in to get more in-depth in the negotiation process.

Mass Emails: It was a good thought back in April when I wanted to send Mass Emails to all the dues paying members. I've been struggling to get the right platform to do this. I've tried Roadrunner, Gmail as well as Outlook. I just get errors and it is such a huge process. I have emails in Notepad, Excel as well as in each email system. I am looking to do this in another platform that will allow for lots of emails to be sent. Please be patient while I transition to the new Mass Email system! Thank you ---- Holly

Fight Back with the Truth!

We will be holding a series of webinars titled “Fighting Back with The Truth” for ALL members to learn about the Freedom Foundation’s lies and attacks and how they can fight back with the truth.  Celebrating the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, January 15 we honor Dr. King's 95th birthday and all that he did to advance the rights of minorities in America. We also must not forget that Dr. King gave his life while preparing to march on behalf of striking AFSCME sanitation workers. I encourage you all to take some time to find and participate in observances in honor of Dr. King near you.

 Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024!  This year we will negotiate a new contract with Monroe County, starting 2025.  Looking forward to this new endeavor for CSEA.  The team is meeting for the first time on January 11, 2024.  We will be going over the survey results.  We will publish the survey results on here and our website CSEA UNIT 7400 (csea-unit-7400.org) for the top items the members want us to pursue.
